From Trash Bin to Government Desk: The Inspiring Journey of Mala Bapalkar
In a world where challenges can often define us, some stories stand out as powerful reminders of human resilience, hope, and determination. One such remarkable tale is that of Mala Bapalkar, a visually impaired woman from Maharashtra, whose life journey is nothing short of extraordinary.
A Shocking Beginning
Twenty-five years ago, a newborn baby girl, blind and abandoned, was found in a trash bin at the Jalgaon railway station in Maharashtra. Rescued by the local police, she was handed over to a children’s shelter, where she was given a name — Mala Bapalkar. Later, she was moved to a rehabilitation center, where her life slowly began to take shape.
The Light Within the Darkness
Despite being visually impaired from birth, Mala’s inner vision and determination were crystal clear. She received her education through Braille at a special school, where she developed a deep love for learning. Completing her schooling was just the first step in what would become an inspiring academic and professional journey.
A Mentor and a Mission
Mala found a guiding light in Shankar Baba Bapalkar, a mentor who not only supported her dreams but also gave her his family name — a symbol of belonging and identity. With his support, Mala began preparing for competitive government exams with unwavering focus.
Failing Forward
Her first two attempts at the Tehsildar examination ended in failure. But Mala did not let those setbacks define her. Instead, they became stepping stones. She remained undeterred, motivated by a burning desire to prove that limitations are only in the mind.
Victory Against All Odds
In May 2024, Mala took the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) examination. Her hard work and perseverance paid off — she passed the exam and has now been appointed as a Revenue Assistant at the Nagpur Collector’s Office.
